VIRAL NOW: Baby Boy Born With 4 Legs and 2 Penises

A baby boy in India was recently born with four legs and two penises, which is three more appendages than a baby boy needs. So doctors at Bangalore’s Narayana Health City successfully removed the additional legs and penis. The boy is recovering from the surgery, but it wasn’t an easy procedure, according to a CNN report. In fact, the operation took 5 hours and required 20 doctors, nurses, and technicians.

On January 21, the unnamed boy was born with the uncommon birth defect polymelia, which results in extra, often deformed limbs or organs. According to CNN, polyemia occurs when an embryo forms into conjoined twins, but when one twin stops growing, its extra body parts remain attached to the other twin. The condition is referred to as “parasitic twins,” which could double as a horror flick or death-metal band.

“These are problems that happen from time to time and [are] irrespective of socioeconomic status,” Dr. Sanjay Rao, a senior pediatric surgeon at Narayana Health City who performed the surgery, told CNN. Strangely, this is the fourth case of polyemia that the hospital has treated in the past 10 years, including a 2008 case where a girl was born with four legs and four arms.

Dr. Rao told CNN that the presence of the extra twin complicated the surgery. “Because the anatomy is not typical, a lot of work had to be done before the operation to clearly define the anatomy, what structures are shared between the parasitic twin and the main baby, the blood vessels need to be identified to control blood loss so there was a lot of pre-operative work to build a road map that would help us during the operation,” he said.

CNN reports the boy will be discharged in the next week, and Narayana will cover his follow-up surgery care for free.
